The Culture Directorate welcomes applications from international artists to benefit from
an Artist in Residence program, offering the opportunity to develop their work in Malta
over a period of one month. The residency provides a platform for exploration,
connection and reflection across artistic disciplines.

The call is open for established and emerging artists with a minimum of two years of proven experience in their
respective field. The allocated budget caters for a maximum of two artists, with a
maximum total budget of with a maximum budget of €10,000 per artist. The Artist in
Residence 2025 envisions to position Malta as an innovative artistic hub and through
different artistic collaborations directly contribute to advance a broad understanding of
culture and enhance its visibility and role in promoting dialogue and democracy. The
call invites participation by artists hailing from across different regions.
This residency is a space for artists to step beyond their routines and immerse
themselves in new experiences. It is an opportunity to explore – pushing creative
boundaries, experimenting with ideas and engaging with unfamiliar environments. It
aims to foster connection – with fellow artists, local communities, and the deeper
layers of one’s own practice. And it encourages reflection – a chance to pause,
absorb, and refine artistic vision. Through these three pillars, the residency nurtures
growth, dialogue, and transformation.

Details


The Artist in Residence will be supported with travelling expenses, accommodation,
an artistic fee and per-diem allowance, which will be discussed at agreement stage
with the selected artists. The artists will benefit from an array of opportunities, including
opportunities for collaboration, with leading local professionals and emergent artists.

The Artist in Residency is expected to:


1) Develop an artistic project which includes reference to Malta, and/or includes
direct collaboration with a local artist1;
2) Deliver lectures, talks and/or lead workshops for students, local artists and
interested persons identified in collaboration with the Culture Directorate;

3) Establish an active network across physical borders, artistic disciplines and
demographic constrains.


The residency will take place between 1st July and 30th September 2025.
